This summary report presents and analyses the key findings from eight case studies, which reflect a wide range of models of online learning, each of which has been developed for specific reasons, largely in relation to visions of how technology can transform learning, but also to solve practical problems such as re-engaging disaffected learners and coping with rising pupil numbers

This study analyzed the content of two newspapers, namely the government owned New Vision and the privately owned Daily Monitor for their coverage of the 2011 presidential elections. A total sample size of 499 news articles was analyzed for coverage, structural and selection biases. The results indicated that although the presidential race involved eight candidates, the incumbent Yoweri Museveni received more coverage in both newspapers than other candidates. He was followed by his main challenge Kiiza Besigye. Third party candidates received minimal coverage from both newspapers. The New Vision was also found to have given more favorable coverage to the Museveni than other contenders. On the other hand Daily Monitor was also found to have provided more favorable coverage to opposition candidates than Museveni, reinforcing the literature of how media partisanship influences election coverage. Lastly, although New Vision carried more articles about the election than Daily Monitor, the latter provided greater depth of coverage of the election in terms of article length

    Visualising Business Data: A Survey

    Get PDF
A rapidly increasing number of businesses rely on visualisation solutions for their data management challenges. This demand stems from an industry-wide shift towards data-driven approaches to decision making and problem-solving. However, there is an overwhelming mass of heterogeneous data collected as a result. The analysis of these data become a critical and challenging part of the business process. Employing visual analysis increases data comprehension thus enabling a wider range of users to interpret the underlying behaviour, as opposed to skilled but expensive data analysts. Widening the reach to an audience with a broader range of backgrounds creates new opportunities for decision making, problem-solving, trend identification, and creative thinking. In this survey, we identify trends in business visualisation and visual analytic literature where visualisation is used to address data challenges and identify areas in which industries use visual design to develop their understanding of the business environment. Our novel classification of literature includes the topics of businesses intelligence, business ecosystem, customer-centric. This survey provides a valuable overview and insight into the business visualisation literature with a novel classification that highlights both mature and less developed research directions

    Aircraft wing structure detail design

The provisions of this project call for the design of the structure of the wing and carry-through structure for the Viper primary trainer, which is to be certified as a utility category trainer under FAR part 23. The specific items to be designed in this statement of work were Front Spar, Rear Spar, Aileron Structure, Wing Skin, and Fuselage Carry-through Structure. In the design of these parts, provisions for the fuel system, electrical system, and control routing were required. Also, the total weight of the entire wing planform could not exceed 216 lbs. Since this aircraft is to be used as a primary trainer, and the SOW requires a useful life of 107 cycles, it was decided that all of the principle stresses in the structural members would be kept below 10 ksi. The only drawback to this approach is a weight penalty
